Experiments in tonality

I've posted this photo before, but thought I would share some experimentation I'm doing with black and white photography. Here are two versions of the same scene. The first is very similar to how the actual landscape looked, as it was a dark day and raining hard. The second version has been brightened considerably, almost to the stage of looking posterized. No matter how the background and mood are altered, the contrast remains very high and the flat gray light has compressed all details into silhouettes. I love the tricks of light!

Woods, water, and the Swan Range

Views from a canoe...A scene like this stays with me for a long time when I am back in the "world" dealing with the challenges of family health problems, work, and the tribulations we all face as members of the human race.

Views from a canoe...There's nothing quite like the sight of the moon reflected on a glassy lake. Each full moon, no matter where it may be, is a miracle of its own...never, never take it for granted...

Views from a canoe... I'll post a series of shots taken at different times of the day from my beloved little red canoe, which carries me faithfully up the inlet and around the lake where my dad built our little cabin 50 years ago. It's a tried, true, and trusted companion.

Peaceable waters

Peaceable waters, originally uploaded by Bitterroot.

This is the outlet to a pristine little lake near the Mission Mountains Wilderness in western Montana. Unfortunately, this area is owned by a private timber operation and I fear it may be opened up to development sooner rather than later. The area surrounding the lake has already been logged beyond recognition.

This is why I am trying to visit and capture as many unspoiled areas in my home state as possible before they all just slip away under the developers' bulldozers. I also support local citizens' groups that are working, sometimes very effectively, to preserve open space and wilderness in western Montana. Here are three local groups that are worthy of your support as well:

The Five Valleys Land Trust

The Clark Fork Coalition

Garden of the gods

A water-lily dream, originally uploaded by Bitterroot.

Garden of the gods

On a canoe trip yesterday, I was just enthralled by this garden of the gods! What lovely delicate blooms, floating entwined with each other above the submerged tangled weeds of the lake's inlet.

I'm on my way into town from the tumbledown old cabin I visit regularly in western Montana. I've been out of touch for about ten days, hoping to resume regular posting on August 15.

Summer dreams... Yup, this is actually a color shot. Amazing how quickly the world turns monochromatic when the sky darkens.
