Nature's bite - don't tangle with this one!
Summer dreams... Summer has turned so fierce in so many parts of the world. This thorn-filled thistle is my acknowledgment that summer can have a very forbidding dimension to it. We are sweltering here in Wisconsin - hoping to see it break by Wednesday. My Montana cousins claim to be sending more reasonable weather this way from the western slopes.

Bitterroot Mountains, Idaho
Summer dreams... No matter how much this small plane was buffeted by the rough air around these mountains, its passengers were a lot more comfortable than Lewis and Clark and their expedition, which crossed this Bitterroot Range two centuries ago in their quest for a northwest passage to the Pacific.

Salmon River, Idaho
Summer dreams: This is the "River of no Return", the river that Lewis and Clark hoped to follow to get to the Pactfic. Clark found that its rapids were far too violent and turned back to march up the Bitterroot Valley to cross the Bitterroots in an impossibly rugged area. I loved floating this river, not only because of the L&C history, but the subline beauty of the cliffs, woods, and alpine meadows that drifted past us in our kayaks.
